SS05 - Ameloblastoma From A to Z

Ameloblastoma is the most common benign aggressive jaw tumor encountered by the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. The behavior of this tumor is different in the maxilla and mandible. The treatment has evolved over the years, as has the reconstruction of the acquired defect. This session will illustrate the difference in behavior of the maxillary vs. mandibular ameloblastomas as well as the approaches to management. The session also will highlight the approach to reconstruction of small vs. large acquired defects after resection. Additionally, management of the recurrent lesion, those at the skull base and those in patients who are not medically fit for resection will be discussed. Additionally, the session will discuss the malignant variant and the role of radiation therapy in treatment. Targeted gene therapy in management of these jaw tumors also will be explored.
