Obtaining adequate, long-lasting local anesthesia for complex, full-arch cases can be challenging. This presentation will review maximum dose guidelines for local anesthetics and current evidence taken from anesthesiology literature. It also will demonstrate effective techniques for lowering dose and maximizing duration of local anesthetics, ultimately leading to better patient experiences.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
Describe the evidence basis for the guidelines on maximum recommended dose of local anesthetics and reference current data taken from the anesthesia literature.
Recognize the pitfalls that lead to local anesthetic failure during full-arch surgery and the biological basis behind them.
Demonstrate techniques used to limit the amount of local anesthetic required and to effectively time the administration of agents to maintain profound local anesthesia throughout the procedure.
