The incidence of head and neck cancer has risen globally in recent decades, primarily due to an increase in oropharyngeal cancer. OMSs can expect to encounter more patients seeking dental rehabilitation after complex reconstructive procedures and head and neck radiation. This session addresses the challenges of dental implant placement in patients treated for head and neck cancer, reviewing the pathophysiology of radiation on the jawbone and summarizing current literature on implant placement in radiated patients. Case presentations will focus on pre-implant assessment, bone augmentation techniques and surgical management, highlighting successful outcomes and lessons learned from challenging cases.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
  1. Describe the pathophysiology of radiation on the jaw bone and osteoradionecrosis.
  2. Counsel patients regarding the risks, benefits and expected outcomes of dental implant placement in the radiated jaw.
  3. Perform safe dental implant placement and manage complications in head and neck cancer patients.
