Approximately 300,000 cases of oral cancer are diagnosed annually worldwide, with an overall mortality rate of about 40 percent in the United States. Oral squamous cell carcinoma, the most common type of oral cancer, progresses from normal tissue through premalignant stages to invasive carcinoma. Premalignant stages can present as white, red or mixed lesions, which may be flat, verrucous or papillary. This session will discuss recent advances in diagnosing and managing oral epithelial dysplasia and carcinoma in situ from an OMS’s perspective.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
  1. Discuss the concept of a two-step process of cancer development in the oral mucosa.
  2. Discuss differences between precursor lesion and condition and the application of the new terminology – potentially malignant lesion.
  3. Manage oral epithelial dysplasia and carcinoma in situ.
