SA1 - Mandibular Third Molar Coronectomies: Outcomes and Sequelae

Abstract:

Aim: This study retrospectively reviews the outcomes of mandibular third molar coronectomies performed at Leeds Dental Institute, focusing on radiographic indicators for coronectomy, post-operative complications, and success rates.
Material and

Methods: A total of 253 coronectomy procedures, performed between September 2019 and September 2024, were included in this audit. The age range of patients was 18 to 82 years. Procedures were carried out under local anesthesia, intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia by practitioners of varying experience levels. Data were analyzed to assess radiographic findings that indicated the need for coronectomy, the incidence of post-operative complications, and the long-term success of the procedure. This audit also aimed to evaluate the potential for asymptomatic long-term retention of roots, the occurrence of second procedures, and the absence of intraoperative complications such as inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury.

Results: The study identified key radiographic signs that warranted the decision to proceed with coronectomy, primarily the proximity of the mandibular third molars to the inferior alveolar nerve. Post-operative complications were noted, though the incidence of major issues such as IAN injury was low. The success rate for the procedures was found to be 92%, with no significant cases of root retention or the need for additional surgeries.

Conclusion: Mandibular third molar coronectomy at Leeds Dental Institute has a high success rate, with minimal postoperative sequelae, making it a viable option for cases at risk of nerve injury.
