Cecile A. Feldman has served as Dean of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, School of Dental Medicine since 1999. The school was formally known as the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – New Jersey Dental School.
A 1984 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Feldman went on to earn a certificate in advanced general dentistry from the same school in 1985 and an MBA in Health Care Administration from The Wharton School.
She came to the New Jersey Dental School as a clinical assistant professor in 1988, and since then served as a professor in the departments of General Dentistry, Restorative Dentistry, and Community Health. In 1990, Dr. Feldman became Director of Information Services and Quality Assurance, then Associate Dean for Planning and Assessment, and in 1998, Acting Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Dr. Feldman’s accomplishments during that period included: expanding the school’s educational offerings; revamping of the clinical management information system; increasing research and clinical revenues; strengthening ties to surrounding communities; and increasing the school’s involvement in oral health advocacy and education. Dr. Feldman oversaw the design and construction of an 80,000-square-foot addition to the school’s facilities and has successfully led the school through four accreditation cycles resulting in a 22 year span of continuous compliance with all accreditation standards, an accomplishment which is unique among US dental schools.
Dr. Feldman has been principal investigator or co-investigator on many grants; primary and co-author of more than 100 articles, abstracts and book chapters; and has served as a reviewer and board member for the Journal of Dental Education, as well as a reviewer for the Journal of the American Dental Association and the Journal of Dental Research. She is currently principal investigator of a NIH supported $11.6 million multi-site clinical trial to determine the comparative effectiveness of a combination opioid containing analgesic to a combination of over-the-counter analgesics.
Dr. Feldman has served as a commissioner for the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education, New Jersey Higher Education Student Assistance Authority, and the Commission on Dental Accreditation. She has also served as an advisory council member for the National Institute of Health Council of Councils and National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council and as chair of the board for the American Dental Education Association.
During the last several years, Dr. Feldman has earned presidential service awards from the American Dental Association, New Jersey Dental Association and American Association of Dental Education (ADEA). Her service on non-profit boards includes the American Dental Association Foundation, New Jersey Special Olympics, New Jersey Health Foundation, Foundation of University of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Rochester Eastman Dental Center Foundation and University Hospital. Dr. Feldman is a fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
