Dr. Perez was born in San José, Costa Rica, where he earned his dental degree with honors from the University of Costa Rica. Following graduation, he practiced as a general dentist and served as an instructor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at his alma mater. During this time, he was awarded a full scholarship to pursue advanced training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Perez subsequently relocated to Bogotá, Colombia, where he completed his residency at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Medical School. The following year, he was accepted into the prestigious Orthognathic and TMJ Surgery Fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Upon completion of his fellowship, he was recruited to San Antonio, Texas, to join the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry.
Board-certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS), Dr. Perez has maintained a robust clinical practice alongside an active academic and research portfolio. In San Antonio, he served as Program Director of the OMS residency and as Director of the outpatient OMS clinic. He also maintained a busy private practice with a focus on orthognathic and TMJ surgery.
Dr. Perez has contributed extensively to the field, authoring over 42 peer-reviewed scientific articles and more than 12 textbook chapters. He has also led more than 14 active IRB-approved research protocols. In recognition of his clinical and academic excellence, he received the 2020 UT Health School of Dentistry Master Clinician Award and the 2021 UT Health Presidential Award for Clinical Excellence.
He has been an engaged member of numerous institutional committees and task forces within the dental school and University Hospital. Dr. Perez is an active member of several professional organizations, including AAOMS, ASTMJS, ACOMS, ACPA, ABOMS, and the ADA. He currently serves as both an ABOMS board examiner and an ADA site visitor for OMS residency programs. Nationally and internationally recognized, Dr. Perez has lectured extensively, contributing to the elevated profile of his program and field.
His clinical interests include maxillofacial trauma, facial reconstruction, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, obstructive sleep apnea, and orthognathic surgery. His research centers on the surgical management of TMJ disorders, including total joint replacement with prosthetic devices, and the application of advanced diagnostic technologies to better understand TMJ pathophysiology. He is particularly focused on improving outcomes related to joint movement and function following TMJ reconstruction.
