Eugene R. Viscusi, MD, is professor of anesthesiology and vice chair of the Division of Pain Medicine at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. These roles encompass oversight of acute and chronic pain and regional anesthesia. Dr. Viscusi is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College (now Sidney Kimmel) and completed his residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Over the past 30 years, Dr. Viscusi has been involved with the development of most of the emerging technologies in the acute and chronic pain spaces as a consultant and researcher, and he has published widely on emerging technologies. In the mid-1990s, he embraced acute pain management and developed the first nurse-driven inpatient pain service in the U.S., creating models for implementation that have been used by many other institutions.
Dr. Viscusi has lectured extensively in the U.S. and internationally. He has authored well over 200 peer-reviewed papers in journals, including JAMA, Anesthesiology, Anesthesia & Analgesia and Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, with almost 11,000 citations of his works. He has also authored a textbook on acute pain management, numerous book chapters and several hundred abstracts. In addition, he has appeared in Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal and USA Today, as well as in numerous nationally televised interviews.
Dr. Viscusi is past president of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine. He was chair of the 2024 annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. A fun fact about Dr. Viscusi: He was a professional musician for 25 years as a conductor, organist, harpsichordist and instrument builder!
