Jan Stembirek graduated in Dentistry (completed in 2006) and General Medicine (2007) at Masaryk University. After graduation, he worked at the Department of Dentoalveolar Surgery at the University Hospital of St. Anne in Brno and at the Laboratory of Animal Embryology at the Academy of Sciences in Brno, where he worked on his dissertation as a postgraduate student, which he defended in 2013. From 2009 to the present, he has been working at the Clinic of Oral, Maxillofacial and Facial Surgery at the University Hospital of Ostrava and in 2016 he certified in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. A year ago, he habilitated at Masaryk University in Brno.
He deals with orofacial traumatology with a focus on the orbits, as well as jaw anomalies, obstructive sleep apnea therapy, treatment of the temporomandibular joint and head and neck oncology. He is a co-author of more than three dozen impact and non-impact articles and a co-investigator of three grants from the Agency for Health Research and several smaller grants within the framework of institutional support from the University Hospital Ostrava.
Currently, in cooperation with the Eye Clinic of the University Hospital Ostrava, he is trying to find indication criteria for isolated orbital fractures and, in cooperation with the oncology scientific team, biomarkers for more precise diagnostics of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and jaw anomalies.
