SSOD42 - Point-of-Care 3D Technology in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: Contemporary Practices

Point-of-care 3D printing is transforming oral and maxillofacial surgery by enhancing precision and efficiency. This technology allows for the creation of highly accurate, patient-specific models and surgical guides directly in the clinical setting. This session will outline how the benefits of point-of-care 3D printing are maximized when strict protocols are followed to ensure quality and compliance with regulatory standards. In orthognathic surgery, in-house virtual surgical planning enables the efficient and cost-effective production of occlusal splints. For TMJ surgery, custom implants and prosthetics can be tailored using in-house software to fit each patient’s unique anatomy, improving both functional and esthetic outcomes. In trauma cases, the rapid production of anatomical models aids in detailed preoperative planning and execution, leading to more effective treatments.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
  1. Develop familiarity with the hardware and software involved in point-of-care 3D planning and printing.
  2. Describe the regulatory requirements to develop a 3D printing protocol to ensure safe and compliant point-of-care treatment.
  3. Explain the indications in using point-of-care technology for orthognathic, trauma and TMJ surgery.
