The possibility of a post-antibiotic era is becoming real. Adverse effects of antibiotic use (i.e., side effects) also are well recognized. It is increasingly understood that continuing antibiotic therapy empirically for multiple days is not more therapeutic than a truncated course of medicine. This session will discuss how to judiciously treat a maxillofacial trauma patient cohort with antibiotics and who should be treated with antibiotics.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
Implement an evidence-backed, streamlined protocol with regard to the use of pre-, peri- and postoperative antibiotic therapy in the maxillofacial trauma patient population.
Develop an evidence-backed protocol to minimize surgical site wound infections.
Discuss how OMSs should conduct themselves as informed antibiotic stewards and guide their respective team (and if applicable, residents) to do the same.
