This session will review five closed anonymized malpractice cases involving dental implants, lingual nerve injury, inferior alveolar nerve injury, mediastinitis and sinus bone grafting. The role of presurgical medical evaluation, management of concurrent illnesses, surgical planning, prevention and early recognition of surgical complications, and management of patients as people will become clear as these cases unfold.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
Describe the appropriate preoperative management of concurrent systemic problems, such as diabetes, sinusitis and immunocompromising diseases.
Prevent inferior alveolar nerve injuries by performing partial odontectomy when indicated by any of three validated preoperative radiographic signs.
Refer appropriate nerve injury patients for microneurosurgical consultation.
Recognize and manage periodontal disease in the preoperative evaluation of dental implant patients.
