Immunotherapy has transformed the landscape of cancer treatment over the last decade, including for head and neck cancer. The mechanism of action, effect on survival and patient experience for these therapies differ substantially from cytotoxic chemotherapy. This session aims to promote understanding of why and how immunotherapy works, as well as the implications for cancer patients and for the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
  1. Describe the cells and interactions involved with immuno-oncology.
  2. Analyze differing checkpoint inhibitors and combination therapies used in treatment of head and neck cancer, when they are used and their advantages and disadvantages.
  3. Describe the adverse effect profile of checkpoint inhibitors, including immune-related adverse events.
  4. Discuss new strategies for immunotherapy being investigated.
