This session is designed to help dental professionals overcome barriers and initiate meaningful conversations with patients about mental health. It delves into the impact of mental health disorders on oral health and provides practical, easy-to-ask questions to guide discussions about mental health with patients, colleagues, family and friends. The session also reviews strategies to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and discusses various forms of self-harm. It offers a detailed, four-step approach for evaluating when to refer patients to a mental health professional. Additionally, the course provides valuable resources to enhance patient care and promote a more holistic approach to overall well-being.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
  1. Identify five ways to overcome the stigma of mental health.
  2. Apply a four-step approach to breaking the barrier of discussing mental health with patients.
  3. Recognize common myths associated with suicide and identify different types of self-harm.
